On the afternoon of December 6th, 2022, Professor Shu Lianjie of the University of Macau gave an online lecture on Data Science and its Applications to the School of Statistics. The lecture was presided by Liu Xiaohui, Vice Dean of the School of Statistics. Some teachers and graduate students of the School of Statistics participated in the lecture.

To begin with, Professor Shu explained the application of data science in industrial science from the background, the importance and tools of data science, combined with two industrial examples. He introduced the background and concept of data science from the development process of industrial revolution.

Then, Professor Shu explained the importance and purpose of data science. The importance of data science nowadays can be seen in Professor Shu's reference to the report of Gartner, a global IT industry consulting firm, which first mentioned data science in 2014.

Professor Shu then pointed out that data science requires statistical analysis, data processing and visualization, which have important applications in fields such as finance, energy, healthcare and manufacturing. He talked about the differences between big data, data science and data analytics, and pointed out how big data has changed our life.

Finally, Professor Shu introduced the application of data science in different fields with two examples: Financial inclusion risk control and Smart meter data analysis and abnormal user detection. The combination of theory and practice further highlights the importance of data science.
Following the lecture was a heated question and answer session, Professor Shu shared his perspectives on the differences between industrial process control and statistical process control, and the specific details of smart meters. This wonderful lecture helps teachers and students of the School of Statistics to further understand the charm of data science, and provided a new direction for everyone to engage in data science research.
