The history of the Department of Economic Statistics can be traced back to 1978, when Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics resumed the program of the four major majors. It is the oldest department in the School of Statistics. The Department has trained more than 30 graduates so far, with students all over the country. The graduates are generally well received by the employers.
The Department has a major in data engineering. The major of data engineering relies on the first-level doctoral and master’s programs in statistics. This major adapts to the needs of social and economic development. The major cultivates innovative and entrepreneurial talents who have professional knowledge and ability of collecting, sorting and analyzing statistical data, are specialized in data output and organization, data modeling and analysis, can use statistics, computer technology and related knowledge to engage in data processing, data management and data in-depth analysis in various enterprises including government departments, financial departments, portals and E-commerce, can further their study in relevant majors in universities and research institutions at home and abroad, and have the quality of “Trust, Sensitivity, Honesty and Perseverance”.
At present, the Department of Economic Statistics has 24 full-time teachers, including 1 member of the economics teaching steering committee of higher education of the Ministry of Education, 1 candidate for Gan Po 555 Engineering Excellence, 1 candidate for Young Jinggang Scholar, 6 doctoral supervisors, 2 famous teachers in Jiangxi Province, and 3 young and middle-aged academic leaders in Jiangxi Province. More than 93% of teachers have doctorates, and the professional title structure, educational background structure and age structure of the teaching staff are reasonable.
The Department of Economic Statistics has long been centered on discipline development. The Department will take scientific research to promote teaching as the focus, and has formed a powerful research team centering on national economic accounting, poverty alleviation performance evaluation, government performance evaluation, environmental economic analysis and other directions. In the past five years, the teachers of the Department have published more than 30 monographs and textbooks; presided over more than 20 national longitudinal topics; more than 40 provincial-and ministerial-level topics and horizontal topics entrusted by provincial development and reform commission. The teacher has published many academic theses in such important journals as Statistical Research, Quantitative Economic and Technical Economic Research, and Financial Research.
The Department of Economic Statistics has also made many breakthroughs in teaching. The course Easy Learning of Statistics was rated as the best open online course of colleges and universities in Jiangxi Province in 2017. The core course teaching team of statistics was rated as the provincial teaching team of Jiangxi Province in 2014. Innovation Exploration and Application of Practical Teaching System for Economic Statistics was awarded the first prize of the 14th batch of teaching achievements (undergraduate level) in Jiangxi Province in 2014. The teachers of the whole department altogether presided over more than 20 teaching reform topics. Among them, Supporting Practical Teaching Program for Economic Statistics won the first prize of supporting practical teaching program issued by China General Chamber of Commerce in 2011. “Optimization and Practice of Quality Course System of Statistics” won the 12th special prize of excellent teaching achievement of Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics in 2010. The course Statistics, which is in the charge of the Department of Economic Statistics, has been selected into provincial quality courses for many times. Falling in Love with Statistics was successfully selected into national quality resource sharing course in 2014. The textbook Statistics compiled by professor Luo Liangqing won many national and provincial awards.
The basic courses and specialized courses that the Department of Economic Statistics undertakes teaching task basically have: statistics, national economic accounting, time series analysis, multivariate statistical analysis, national economic accounting, introduction to data engineering, unstructured data processing, python data analysis basics, R software, data mining, economic game theory, macroeconomic statistical analysis, high-frequency data analysis, etc.
