On the morning of December 9th, 2022, Professor Huo Xiaoming of Georgia Tech University was invited to lecture on Deep Learning, Data Science, and Algorithm online for the teachers and students of the School of Statistics. The lecture was presided by Liu Xiaohui, Deputy Dean of the School of Statistics. Some teachers and graduate students of the School of Statistics attended the lecture.

To begin with, Professor Huo Xiaoming briefly introduced the history of the rise of deep learning. Specialists continuously improved the algorithm program by imagenet competition, and finally found that the neural network has obvious advantage in the processing of models. Deep learning began to be widely accepted by the public.

Then, Professor Huo introduced the core content of the lecture from several aspects. The first part is the application of deep learning. He pointed out that deep learning is widely used in object image recognition, automatic face generation, automatic translation and automatic text generation, etc. Meanwhile, deep learning can be applied to different fields by using open source software “open south software”.

In the second part, Professor Huo introduced various aspects of data science and how to prepare for a career in this emerging field.

Finally, Professor Huo introduced some first-order stochastic methods. The first-order method’s implementation is more straightforward than other methods because it involves only gradients.

Following the lecture was a heated question and answer session, in which teachers and students asked questions of relevant academic and realistic issues actively. Professor Huo Xiaoming's wonderful lecture demonstrated the unique understanding of data science and deep learning, which provided beneficial examples for teachers and students of the School of Statistics to engage in relevant research work.
